'Green' tourism for Cape York Peninsular
The continued growth of the Cape York eco-tourism industry, if properly managed, offers the hope for economic development that does not destroy Cape York's extraordinary environmental values. In recent times, visitor numbers to Cape York have grown 3-5% per annum. To ensure that tourism grows in a sustainable manner, the Wilderness Society and the Adventure Company are working together to produce a 'Responsible Guide to Tourism on Cape York Peninsular.' Dave Phoenix, Operations Manager of the Adventure Company, believes that the protection of Cape York's natural and cultural environment is the key to a prosperous future for the Cape York Tourism Industry. "Cape York Peninsula provides Far North Queensland with a unique opportunity to expand its economic base but at the same time protecting some of Australia’s last true wilderness areas. The release of the Natural Heritage Significance report detailing the ‘Cape’s’ global values will enable the tourism industry to develop truly unique experiences based around the environmental integrity of the region. Already, tourism is growing on the Cape. We as an industry must act now to ensure a sustainable strategy is put in place, so as the industry grows, the natural assets visitors are paying to see do not become degraded as they have in other parts of Australia. This is a defining moment for the tourism industry in Far North Queensland. It can lead the way and set new standards in tourism that not only provides a sound economic base for the region but also protects the unique environmental values found on Cape York Peninsula. "
